When to Contact Us for an Emergency

When it comes to emergencies, the sooner they are addressed, the better the results will be. However, many people are unsure what counts as an emergency and don’t seek help until serious damage has already been done.

Please contact us immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Severe or lingering pain in your teeth or jaw
  • A knocked-out tooth
  • A cracked or chipped tooth (especially if bleeding)
  • Damaged or dislodged restorations (crowns, fillings, etc.)
  • An abscess in the gums
  • Any other oral trauma

When you contact us, we evaluate your situation and determine the level of emergency. We try to see all emergencies on the same day. Our dentists are experienced in handling a variety of dental situations, including emergencies, and are prepared to help you in whatever way you need.

Preparing for Your Emergency Visit

The steps you take before your visit can make a huge difference in your successful treatment.

If a tooth has been knocked out or broken, gather the tooth or pieces. Rinse them in water (do not use soap). If the tooth is intact, try to place it back in the empty socket; otherwise, store it in milk until you get to the dentist’s office.

If you have pain, you can apply a cold compress to your cheek in the area of the pain. Never apply cold directly to the site, as this can slow the healing process. Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen can also help, although aspirin should not be used if there is bleeding.
